Located in the northern part of the state, Pine Glen Park is a recreational area that consists of a variety of hiking trails. It is also known for its history, which includes a family named Halle that lived here for a time.

One of the more noteworthy attractions is the horse barn, which is currently serving as the park’s nature center. A short trail takes visitors through the halls, while the adjacent barn houses a selection of interesting artifacts. A visit to this quaint burg is the perfect antidote to the hectic schedules of city dwellers. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature buff, or a golf aficionado, the Halle Farm’s hallowed grounds is an experience worth the trek. The site is free and open to the public. During the summer months, visitors are treated to free tours of the barn, the farm’s most notable resident.

Penitentiary Glen Reservation

Located in Kirtland, Ohio, Penitentiary Glen Reservation is part of the Lake Metroparks system. It features a 400 acre property, a Wildlife Center, and a Nature Center.

The wildlife center is open 9 am to noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and is closed on Thanksgiving. The wildlife center is operated by the Lake Shore Live Steamers Club. It offers rehabilitation services for injured animals. Many patients are endangered species. The wildlife center also offers hands-on exhibits and educational programs. The Nature Center, meanwhile, features an interactive exhibit, “Window on Wildlife.”

The nature center occasionally leads hikes through the gorge. It is a quarter-mile loop of gently rolling terrain. The trails are well-built and are well-marked. The sheltered pavilion is an ideal spot to picnic and enjoy the sounds of nature. There are restrooms nearby.

The Penitentiary Glen Reservation is home to 17 species of state-listed plants. It has breeding populations of the Dark-eyed Junco, Winter Wren, and Brown Creeper.

Hiking trails
